bow hunting

There are two schools of thought on when you should draw your bow. The first strategy would be to draw your bow once you see a deer coming towards you. The second method would be the draw and weight approach. This is when a hunter draws the bow and holds it at full draw until the animal approaches and you have a shot. Here are some things to consider when deciding which strategy will work best for you.

If you wait to draw your hunting bow until the animal is within sight and in position for the shot, you risk alerting the animal to your presence. The movement required to draw the bow is something that can easily be picked-up by an animal, especially a deer. So if you think that the waiting to draw approach is the one for you, just know that if you go this route you may:

* Never be ready in time when the shot does present itself.

* The movement and noise from drawing the bow may alert the animal and you’ll never get a shot.

With the draw and hold approach, you have several advantages over the waiting to draw strategy outlined above. First, by drawing your hunting bow before the animal is in range, you eliminate the risk of the animal sensing the movement associated with drawing the bow. Second, with this strategy you will be ready when the animal does present itself. You only have a few seconds to get off a shot and by using the draw early method you’ll be ready when that shot does arise. Things to consider with this approach:

* The animal may change direction and never enter your shooting zone. Thus, you could be holding the bow at full draw for a long time and eventually have to let down. This action may spook the deer.

* Because the animal will most likely be moving, it is harder to predict the range of the animal without the use of a rangefinder.

There is no right or wrong answer on which approach to use when bow hunting. Just know that each method has pros and cons and a hunter has to choose which method is best. However it seems to reason that if you draw your bow at the first opportunity, when the deer approaches the shooting zone, you should be ahead of the action and give yourself the opportunity to get off a shot.
